My Mission

Being Proactive Against Maladaptive Perfectionism

These proposed changes to the structure of schools and extracurriculars are designed to make these institutions less likely to cause maladaptive perfectionism in children later on. They are all centered around the causes of maladaptive perfectionism, coping strategies, and avoiding fixed mindset thoughts that go along with maladaptive perfectionism. Though I would love to see them all implemented, that's not necessarily realistic. The main goal of this movement is to heighten our awareness and care for the massive issue that maladaptive perfectionism is, and to build a society where we're actively taking steps to try and limit its impact on future generations.

What Makes Perfectionism Maladaptive?

Not all perfectionism is bad...

Perfectionism is not a bad thing in itself, but it can become incredibly destructive when it becomes maladaptive. In maladaptive perfectionism,

  • The victim is constantly trying to "prove themselves"

  • They want to "be the best" in comparison to others, with less focus on their own personal development

  • Failures seem to reflect their worth (or lack thereof) as a person

  • The victim thinks that failures are final and define who they are

  • The victim is rooted in fixed mindset: at their core, they think that they are who they are and have unchangeable traits, and their performance is indication of these
